They had a filter to separate the water from piss, you see it in the very first scene, Kevin Costner is pissing in a cup then he puts it in this thing and pumps the handle a few times which makes water come out.
then he drinks it.

People would kill eachother over water, better to have a water source available, like your own well you can pay people to drill it for you.

Stay away from easy to find streams or rivers or well known bodies of water, everybody will piss and shit in it then drink from it after SHTF
