I don't particularly take your paranoid rantings about Russia and the evils of America and empires and whatnot particularly seriously, so I'll stick to reliable news sources in regards to what's going on in the Ukraine. If you understood economics beyond the usual libertarian rantings about the evils of fiat currency, you'd know full well that the gold standard cannot support the needs of any heavily populated industrial country. It'd depress the Russian economy even further than sanctions already have. This is why the world went off it ages ago. It doesn't work in a society with globalized economics. It doesn't have the liquidity. It'd only have any chance of working if China went along with it, and China is completely dependent on the USD for survival, so I don't see that happening. Economic isolation is a death sentence. Russia won't adopt a gold standard. In the long term it would kill them. As for a default, the surplus will shrink as the value of its currency drops. It'll be come a deficit, and then all that Russia has is its foreign currency reserves. I didn't start it. I wasn't fawning over Obama. I was pointing out the fact that he wasn't a Tumblr SJW. The problem governments have with gold standards is that it forces them to be transparent with regards to how much money they're printing and how much is in their gold reserves. The gold standard, like any other standard, isn't meant to "support the needs" (whatever the fuck that means) of the general population. For the record, I don't think Russia is embracing the gold standard (it's going to use gold for international trade, which is smart because there's universal demand for gold) and that wasn't my question. This is why countries started going off it in WW1. There simply wasn't enough money to support production. They had to switch to the more abstract, credit-based fiat currency, and stuck with it as industrialization continued. The gold standard is inconvenient and limited. And I've pointed it out already. Russia is pegged to the USD, the oil dollar. That makes its surplus completely meaningless, as it has no control over the value of its currency. A default is very possible if its currency keeps getting devalued. It will simply run out of reserves if its debt keeps building and their currency is worthless. I don't get why you can't understand this.
