That's not how you do concept art. When you make a male and female model of a species or character you never make them overlap. That's unprofessional and tells the people in charge that you either ran out of room, or you couldn't be assed to make them smaller on a digital program where its easy to do so.

You think Bioware has good taste and quality standers, that's too adorable. They used that image in many press conferences and it was one of the first pieces of concept art released. The shitty concept art was the least bad thing about it. This is worst;

The colour is not horrible, but...I see some odd anatomy mistakes in this and I wonder if they have really studied how the muscles overlap and come together, specially in the males. Little mistakes like that will cost you a job. They really will. I also see very little variant in any of the concepts except for the 1st one. The other two are generic copy and past and coloured differently.

The whole point of a starting concept is to have as many variants as possible to show your art director. That's your goal. If your copying and pasting and it looks the same in each picture aside from minute changes? Your art director is going to wonder why he hired you. Because he hired you for your design skills and your ability to work fast and to a deadline. I speak from experience. Spent two years in a game studio as art asset designer.

That's legit? I actually thought that was just fanart. Well I don't know about the Dragon Age team, but the Mass Effect team concept wise was great.

It's real, the whole Dragon Age 2 team was nothing but sycophants and fanboys. All the romanceable companions were whiny little cunts. Here are your choices for romances- a backstabbing slut, a retarded elf girl who gets her entire clan killed, a terrorist with paranoid schizophrenia, a Final Fantasy character, and a asexual christfag. All of them are horrible, the only tolerable companions were the ones you can't fucked and only good character was a fucking Muslim warlord ox man. Terrible game.

The game also looked like shit and all the concept art was shit, like they just threw out all the drafts and left the final designs for display.

Mass Effect's concept art, music, and aesthetics are boss though.

Another thing that bothers me about this piece is that all the ladies are wearing high heels. I can maybe understand the really pale race, for they have the appearance of pompous assholes.
However the tribal looking race? Why. Why would the females possess such footwear. Wouldn't that be a complete inconvenience, especially considering what kind of an environment they probably live in?
Geez, the more I look at this the worse it gets.

Basically, he took the same base for everything and changed it only here and there. And yeah. The heels things is just...retarded. They didn't really NEED footwear anyway since it seems to be just showing of the...races? I guess. No reasons or it.

It's for the sex appeal I guess.
Just like how for some concept art, for no particular reason the female models stand on their tip toes.

It's prevalent with fantasyfags. Especially when one based their art on Korean MMORPGS. I swear, there are no shortage of scantly clothed females wearing high heels, this also plagued most members of CGHUB, home of AZN.

CGHub can have some magical stuff on there with a ton of pros but yeah. I guess technical, style wise I have no problem with Korean MMOs and stuff, but what bugs me is the lack of functional design in a lot of them. It just pains me to see it. You can have inventive, interesting designs without adding ten million belts and calling it a day.

Even pros can have stale and crap works. I always biased against female warrior / adventurer wearing in high heels with thin pointy stilleto. Yes it's the lack functionality that bothers me, even with some western fantasy style, it's all lead to exposed midriff and cleavage armor.... well at least not as bad as Red Sonja.

Fortunately there are several few fantasy artist have a sense to draw female warrior in logical armor instead of trying sexyness. But I have no problem with the sexy approach of magic caster since they wore clothes instead of armor, but then again not looking like a total slut.

I won't lie. I fucking love Boris Vallejo in all his misogynistic glory. I mean, those super over the top 70s style fantasy art with like Barbarian babes with tiny chain mail bits covering their boobs. It's fucking hilarious to me.

But yeah. Functional vs aesthetics is a big problem in video games especially when it comes to female characters. It's like 'How do we make this character a sex bomb? Cut out the boob part and show off her cleavage! GENIUS.' It's like, they can't figure out that sexiness can be implied in many ways and not just in showing off a lot of skin. I mean, tons of dudes wanna bang Samus and she wears a powersuit for the majority of all her games.

I like the coloring and the lineart in the piece.
To me what really kills it is just how bright those bugs are. They really divert your attention to an extreme degree and the color scheme is really out of place in the overall piece.
Plus the tigers lifted foot is a bit too long compared to the other one.
