She's not being 100% serious. I think it's almost poetic. I lived in a small liberal town and would smoke on the streets after school and got some of the dirtiest fucking looks I've ever got in my life just because I was smoking
Sometimes it's hard to tell with political writers. It's like, "Wow, are you seriously that batshit stupid or are you making a joke?" Yeah, smoking definitely carries a social stigma now, I certainly don't smoke or admit to smoking around certain company. But at the same time I don't really have any problem with going a week or so without a cigarette, I just smoke when I feel like it (when drinking, driving, or drunk driving, etc.) If you can get an additive-free brand they don't make you fiend as much.
Oh boy, the anti-smoking crowd. Here comes some TL;DR I've never understood the whole chain-smoking thing. I think the tobacco-fiend thing has more to do with the fact that people in the West have no self-discipline. All discipline is external, applied by the state so nobody really develops any ability to say a very simple word to themselves: "no." Of course most people manage to say "no" to heroin because it's a big deal. What people have trouble ditching are the little, seemingly insignificant behaviors they hold on to. People eat too much because they've convinced themselves not saying "no" one time is not a big deal (nevermind that they say it 100 times a week). Same goes for exercise, booze, cigarettes, etc. In college I smoked a cigarette or two on the way back from class when I was particularly bored. Sometimes I loaded up a pipe and went outside for a smoke on weekends. I never went through more than a pack of cigarettes a month and it never cost me more than $7. I rolled my own and smoked American Spirits when I was in a pinch. You don't mind paying $7 for a pack when it's one a month. I also managed not only not to get fat in college and after, but to get fitter while holding down a job. Self-discipline is an alien concept in the US. Enter the prohibitionists. If people can't regulate their own behaviors, it's time to bring in the parental figure: the gummint. People listen to billy batons, Glock 17s, and tasers. Prohibitionists of every stripe are all characterized by a simple common element: a lack of self-discipline. The baptist preachers that swear Jesus didn't drink wine and that booze should be banned are all fat as county-fair sows. They tend to disregard Biblical advice about gluttony. It turns into a puritanical madonna/whore complex where if you indulge in anything prohibited, you are automatically evil. Except today people don't look at you weird if you like strange men to shove their un-covered rods up your ass and blow a load in your dirty asshole because that's bigoted and in no way spreads disease or social unwellness. Funny the way society fucks itself up. I long for more sensible times.
How do you even get addicted? I smoke a single cigarette once ever so often (one to two weeks) or when I'm offered one at a concert. ain't gonna hurt ya
