Winry and Kagome are probably some of the most brazen female characters in manga and anime, especially for the time period InuYasha was published. You even said yourself that she's abusive which would require being bold and behaving as though she were superior to InuYasha, a male which is not exactly a cozy topic in Japan where women are generally raised to be complacent housewives. (yes, that is changing what with how women are choosing careers over family, but having a career doesn't automatically negate cultural influences)
