i thought russians were supposed to love tetris. is it even a thing that WOMEN love tetris..? i mean, usually, that goes into 'all women only play casual shit' category, not 'women love tetris'. that... makes no sense at all.

i made a comment on a youtube vid the other day talking about girl gamers and the stigma surrounding it in general. i basically commented on how, as a female, i always feel i have to compensate, where a guy wouldn't have to, to be considered a 'real gamer'. you know, know more info, be a bit better, etc. brentalfuck is prolly one of those faggots who genuinely believes a girl isn't a REEL GAMHURRR unless she proves herself extensively. not just 'can you use a controller without getting confused?', but 'can you kick my ass 10 times at 5 different games in one 7 hour stretch because if not you aren't a real gamer and ur just a gurlz'. no guy has ever had to deal with that [and if they do, it's to prove if their balls have dropped, not to prove they can play games], but as a female, you kind of expect some crazy fucking competition to sprout up to prove your worth to hold one of the real, certified controllers, and not the piece of shit madcat controller.
but that's a rant for a different day, other than i know brentalfuck is one of those guys.

That pretty much happens in every stretch of geekdom, from video games to comics to books to movies to freakin' anime and manga (why?!).

I've gotten my share of heckling myself from members of both the One Piece and Pokemon fandoms. It's almost impossible to keep my temper from coming to a boil in the presence of these self entitled geeks. What's sad is BOTH fandoms could very well be considered extraordinarily casual compared to say, the Final Fantasy fandoms, stretching back to the late 80s, or the Batman fandoms, which can go back as far as the freakin 40's. And yet, I still get people in my face over being a woman in 'their' fandom.

Derailing my rant there, when it comes to Floss and Preston, they're both actively contributing to the mentality that female geeks are fake. In Floss' case, the Tetris thing was the first and last offense I needed to see how he views female gamers and probably geeks as a whole. In Preston's case, there's plenty of history in not just his work, but his actions, to tell that he's on par with Floss in regards to women in his fanbase. It doesn't help that they both have collaborated with that mentality in the BrentalFloss comics. It was bad enough with their work and attitudes being separate.

dobson has proven more times than once that girls shouldn't like games [unless they're viewing his comics, on his site, giving him ad rev and meeting with him at cons for money and commissioning him] and that female characters in games should be reeled to 'damsel in distress' status. even metroid other m was a thinly veiled 'damsel in distress' theme. shitty game, and he fucking lapped that shit up. brentalfuck admitted he thinks girls should only be playing casual. this mentality is really unnerving to me. because while these guys will say they don't hate FEMALES, they're... kinda doing that. if a girl in in their group, they're either doing it for the dick, or they're lesbian. it's not 'oh, it's a girl with an interest similar to mine', it turns into 'does she want the dick is she leading me on or is she a lesbian what do'. annoying as fuck.

tho i think brental and dobson are both at the point where they know no chick is hopping on the dick. might be why they're so bitter.

It's a really fucking weird phenomenon. Dudes will bitch that they can't find a woman who is into video games and shit, but then when they find one she's either average or equally geeky and thus below their ridiculous neck-bearded standards, or if she manages to be hot and like video games/comics/whatever then she's a faker who is just out to get attention and steal their or something.

That's the thing they nail me on--the competitive aspect. Laughing at me for my preferences and what-have-you and that I have never been in a tournament.

Reason I've never been in a tournament: My preferences are too poor for it. I'm a picky player, so sue me.

Bunch of other shit to. As far as why they nail me on it--I just live in a bad area with few geeks. It's to the point where they want so badly to nitpick on the few females who share the interest I suppose, to prove superiority. I know I'm not the only lady out here who puts up with such bullshit.

They're hobbies dominated by poorly socialized nerds, who are invested in "owning" the entire culture surrounding said hobbies, because they don't fit in any other social setting. Girls are simultaneously feared and desired, and guys who enjoy the same hobbies, but who actually have social skills and aren't invested in their creepy little troglodyte culture are just "jock" outsiders intruding on their domain.

They resist any and all efforts to mainstream their hobbies because they're terrified that they'll turn into junior-high gym class all over again.

Could Dobson be more of a baby? Between this whiny, childish rant (which is all this comic really is) and his use of tired meme-humor, he clearly hasn't grown up at all.

Man, I got to be honest. I was hoping his absence really left him time to think, and take stock in what's important to do for his art. But no, all hes been doing is STEWING over FUCKING TROLLS.

"Troll" has nothing to do with the mythical creature, and has pretty much lose its original meaning, since almost everybody uses it to qualify someone that doesn't share the same opinion/doesn't give compliments on a work. Most people can't even make the difference between the blatant truth or a real "trolling", which is kinda sad.

At least, I'm kinda happy that even some of his fans told him to stop his bullshit or just simply dropped him, in this last journal.

His art may have improved a bit (I still bet that he'll regress very soon, back to his comfort zone), but he's still a jerk despite the countless warnings he got about his behavior.

I can't wait for his backlash to increase if he keeps doing these kind of strips when Kotaku features them, inb4 thousands of confused emails with "What does this have to do with video games?"

Sometimes i wonder though, what does Dobby plan to do in 5-10 years? Like many have mentioned before, while his peers will evolve into better artists, he'll still maintain the popularity among young teens by being a below average skilled artist with the mentality of a teen. Frankly, that thought scares me, the only thing worse than a mediocre artist with shit opinions would be a even worse artist with more shittier opinions.

That hypocrite has often mentioned that being a cartoonist is his biggest ambition and/or that it's his ultimate goal to make a profitable living from being a cartoonist, if he really wants to draw comics for a living then where is his improvement? Where are the original ideas? Occasionally when someone has asked him "Why don't you try out different styles" Dobson would make a Syac strip explaining "Can't, because of deadlines".
Regarding his current affairs, i think this fact just hasn't been stressed enough, "DOBSON, YOU'RE FOCUSING ON A SINGLE STRIP, AND YET YOU REFUSE TO USE YOUR SPARE TIME TO LEARN ANYTHING NEW!" the video games can wait.

I predict that in 10 years will publish his shitty how to draw books to children via Schoolastics.

But that's just it. He hasn't improved his art at all. He's just using a much safer method of making it, with vectors. I don't claim to know much about Adobe Illustrator but I do make silly shit with Flash, so here's what I can say about vectors:



The one on the right was done with a brush tool at whatever magnification for lining. The one on the left was done with vectors, then converted to fills.

It doesn't take too long to realize that while the one on the right has more personality, the one on the left has more control and looks the cleanest. The reason they look so similar in smoothness is partially because I take consistent lineweight kind of seriously, and I want it to look the best it can, by my own hands. Dobson however, does NOT have such fine control, and we've seen it before in his old scanned lines. All he's doing now is relying on vectoring to fix his mistakes, but the thing he doesn't realize is that THEY'RE STILL THERE AND YOU CAN STILL SEE HIM. He always misses some lining, because he realizes "this needs a texture" and does it with his tablet stylus rather than vector it again. He does the same with his shading. The result is

The fur on his legs looks sloppy and so do the arm scales. The shading looks horrible with all of those sloppy lines thrown at the edges, even on the soft skin segments. The fur and brush, okay sure, but not on flesh tones.

As someone who used to try and make art solely with vectors I feel it's necessary to point out where he's made mistakes. If only because I know he reads this shit and can learn something from it.
There is another big problem that using vectors has brought him but I haven't figured out how to formulate it so well. I'll try to build up some examples and explain further when I think of a way.
