LOL TomPreston did it again!

I too used to feel bad for Dobson and the harshness he'd get. As I pointed out in my "I give up" post, I was one of those fools who watched him about 6+ years and admired much of his work because partially he was actually good at the time, and another part being I really didn't know any better in regards to how he treats people who aren't all compliments and ass-kissings.

But after a few bouts of critiquing his work myself, as well as taking notice of his very sour attitude...

Let's just say I saw the light and realized Dobson really isn't as great an artist he claims so much to be, and he's really not that great a person from my experiences first hand. Any time I offered suggestions regarding his work, he was right at my throat, shoving down excuses. Any time I offered suggestions on how to improve himself as a person by being more humble and committed to his work, I'd get a roundabout essay about why he does the things he does, self contradiction, more excuses, and playing victim.

Two simple words and I am absolutely 100% done with him.

I was being genuine in my words when I said I was happy he had admitted that he is not a professional. That was the number one thing many people were so annoyed with him over, waving around the Industry Professional tag like he properly owned it, yet had nothing to show for it in both his work and personality. I really hoped this would be the beginning steps to self improvement.

NOPE!

It's just another show to play victim in, so that his white knights can suit up and defend him, not knowing the whole story behind Dobson's work and words.

I am not that great an artist. I have SO MUCH room for improvement. I'm not that great a story writer either. I strive so hard to improve that too, so that more people will look and give feedback on my work. Not just compliments either. I tend to take those with a grain of salt. Constructive feedback.

I am very hard on myself both as an artist and as a person. I will never understand why people come to me for artistic advice because of my low level. I understand even less why people come to me for personal advice because I see myself as a poor and inexperienced person who doesn't deserve to give advice to anybody about the really deep problems, such as relationship advice and how to cope with anxiety and depression.

I had it beaten into me at a very young age that I should never ever be too prideful of myself and that I should always be critical of myself if I want to improve. If there is a problem, don't cry about it. FIX IT! Don't make excuses. Make a commitment to improve.

It's sad that someone who has had college experience, and has been offered opportunities to really get somewhere in the industry but has so shamefully shot them down, is so prideful and full of himself compared to a complete 100% certified nobody.

Looks like he's given up and is now doing the same thing to other aspiring artists. Without the industry part.

It would also help him to stop doing stuff with Brental Fuck because those two have been worse since they've worked together (probably the worst "business decision" those two manchildren made in their lives). Of course, he has to portray himself as a victim who is unjustly hated, and has to be a stupid prick over something.

I was hoping he would do a 180 like Scott Dewitt of Fanboys, but then I realized that would never happen when he resorted to his bullshit with his other comics and Brental Fuck with the whole, "I'm rebooting Syac, and learned from my experiences" schtick.

I honestly have little sympathy for him. Is the shit he's getting now deserved? Well, yes and no. I wouldn't say it's deserved at the level of "you should stop drawing", but at the "get your shit together" level. And it's sad, I have very little artistic experience, yet even I agree with most of what people are telling him. I may not be an artist, but I certainly appreciate art. I go to museums, watch old films, and most importantly, understand why they are art. And when I had the tenacity to tell Dobson that if he wished to be an artist, he'd have to listen more, instead of speak more, I was told I was offensive. Even after he said he was done with my post! So no, I don't give two shits about him sympathetically. I'm only here to see where the SS Autist crashes into. And boy oh boy, is it on its way to doing that.

What did you expect from a 13 year-old kid who doesn't know any better? If anything, his fans are probably like him: pathetic losers who feel alienated and angsty because no one likes their shitty tastes or opinions on anything.

well, at least 13 year olds can grow up and maybe contribute to society, They have a lot more to experience in life to kick them out of that state of mind.

also, I think this feeling sympathy for him is my own damned personality traits. I've always attracted 'damaged' people as friends. I'm sure I'll get over Preston when I wake up tomorrow. 80% of what he gets came from being an idiot on the internet.

The thing is Preston broke himself if what SA said about him in the old thread is true (I haven't been in SA for a while because the forums are shitty). Even before people fucked with him on the 'net, he had so many chances of learning from people his mom knew in the business (one of them some famous illustrator), and he turned that down. Artists would kill for any kind of job that gives them money and exposure, and Preston rejected a kid's illustration job.

I've been around damaged people as well, but Tom broke himself when he shouldn't have. All the dumb things he's done are finally catching up to him, and no one really triggered him to do anything.

Is this the end of the Tom Preston thread? Or the beginning? MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh, it's definitely true, assuming Dobson was being truthful with his old journal entries (I still have a ton of screen caps of them from before he wiped them from DA). His mom had connections to publishers and artists, including having Tony DiTerlizzi as a family friend. He never took advantage of the learning opportunities there or from school. Dobson has had more opportunities than the majority of aspiring artists, and squandered all of them.

Also, it's funny you should mention the old SA thread right now, too, since it was a pretty similar pity meltdown from Dobson that got that one closed, as throngs of goons suddenly felt sorry for him, suckered into believing he was actually being genuine.

Dobson isn't depressed, he's lazy. He uses these tantrums to keep from having to change or learn - all he wants is people to hug him and tell him he's perfect the way he is, and then he has all the justification he needs to go back to drawing the way he's been drawing since junior high (using the exact same characters). Every time he has the slightest moment of self-reflection, every time he gets anywhere near the realization that learning art is much harder than calling yourself an artist and he might have to actually buckle down and work at it, the tears start up, he cries for his bottle, and the opportunity to learn or grow is buried once more.

Hugboxing doesn't pay his bills though.

Dobson, I tried to give you advice so many times on how to improve yourself and all you ever gave me was the roundabout and middle-finger salute.

Several other people have also attempted to help you get your head out of your ass, but the same followed.

You have no one to blame but yourself.

If he really does go through and stops working for anything other than what he's been contracted for, I will be disappointed, but not too surprised.

He's never taken his work seriously in the first place after all.

This is why you make me sick. 80 percent of your fucking reblogs and comments on tumblr or DA are always positive. Most of the time the people who are negative are still trying to be helpful. I don't think he should be bullied a ton but why is he always such a baby. All those chances, all that help, all your fans; it's all wasted on you.
Shit, I can never tell if you ever enjoyed art or if it was some foil to get attention. You have been calling yourself a professional and trying to give advice you claim to be the industry standard out to people who look up to you, for years. What did you expect? That no one would ever tell you you are wrong? That your methods are terrible? I don't even believe your last post, because you always flip flop around.

Andrew Dobson, I'm glad you're popular, because you're the best example on how NOT to handle popularity and being an artist.

Dobbos, regardless on what you think, the majority of us did not want you to just give up. We wanted you to IMPROVE YOUR DAMN WORK. We wanted you the change you attitude and the way you handle you popularity. You made excuses, ignored people, set loose your whiteknights and pretty much caused yourself to be isolated in your field of work. You did this to yourself and guess what? Now you're hurting your fans.

Any chances of anyone else helping you improve, get work, or other advice, are gone. People will not be willing to help you later along the line. Maybe when you mature, and you're in your 40s barely scarping by, you'll regret it finally. You'd wish you pushed yourself in the end.

You wouldn't last long in the field that you're educated in, because you have constantly push yourself against dozens, maybe even hundreds fighting for that same position. Once a show has ended, you have to look for work all over again, you have to compete again and again. Which means constantly seeking out critique and anything else that'll help you improve your work to impress the next company. You've never had that push to begin with. All you wanted was something handed to you.

You're seriously fucking lazy. Seriously, you can earn $200 doing a part time job at minimum wage in three days. If that's all you need to be ahead then fine yourself a job that will schedule you 16 hours a week. You'll still have 5 days to yourself to work on art. You'll have more money coming in, and get out the damn house. It's near the holiday season so people ARE looking for extra employees. Two days a week for $400 extra bucks a month won't fucking kill you. DAYUM. >:U

I'm just having a small little rage at him. Not everyone is as lucky as he sounds to be, what with having connections with an established artist and others offering to help him. Fuar. Seriously.

So guys, I hope you're not too sad over silly ol Dobson, you guys have inspired me heaps, so you're all doing something right! haha.

If people were writing heartfelt letters to me, I'd feel pretty inspired. Preston's got so much love (be it genuine or not) from his fans and legit critique that all his "baaaw everyone's so mean to me" seems so fucking fake. Seriously fake.

I may have said this somewhere, and in danger of sounding like a broken record, I believe that everyone does get what they deserve. Take that in the loosest sense possible. In the sort of fluid definition that even if bad things happen to good people, those people can still get some sort of good, knowledge, experience, a funny story, out of the bad thing.

A whooole lot of good things have happened to Dobson, as well as a whooooole lot of bad things. If the only thing he can get out of that is "waaaa, fuque all you douchebags, i'll never draw again" then that's a sign of a very pathetic person. If he's mentally capable at all then it's not other people's fault for making him this way, it's his own.

A mature person can take whatever negativity and turn it into something good. Seriously. I think it all comes from the heart, well a mixture of logical thinking and burning passion. The fuck did I just type? You... you know what I mean. I trust you guys.

And oh yes, I'm not sure if Dobson can ever redeem himself to himself or to the world. I'm not exactly willing to bet anything that he will turn his life around anymore. After seeing you guys say stuff about how this emotional breakdown thing has happened before? Yeah, not likely he'll change. That's not saying that he can't. But I don't think he will. And judging from his "waa seeking out negativity" tendencies it doesn't seem like he wants to change.
