That's probably because Ron Paul is more of an independent candidate than a republican. I think he only joined the republican party to get elected, as it is impossible to get elected president if you aren't democrat or republican (Duverger's law)
Ron Paul has run as a Libertarian a couple of time IIRC. After realizing that Americans cannot deal with more than two choices, he gave up and joined the GOP.
