As far as I understand, there are many reasons for this: -The Japanese, unlike Western countries, still see marriage as a prerequisite for having children -Japanese men are being increasingly seen as unattractive mates -Anime (of course)-otaku and hikkikomori attach themselves to anime characters because they are too socially awkward or afraid to talk to girls -In response to all of the above, the Japanese have managed to make relationships a commodity. Dating simulators, host clubs, body pillows, maid cafes, those weird places where you pay for girls to snuggle with you, vending machines that dispense used panties... -No one in the Japanese government is willing to talk about it publicly-they see it as shameful There is an upside to this-Japan is absolutely crowded enough as it is, and there might be some benefit for a population reduction.
