These glass spheres contain things like shrimp, bacteria and algae. It's basically a self contained ecosystem that survives as long as it gets sunlight. Typically they last only 2 years but some are as old as 7. The whole thing was apparently the afterbirth of a NASA project about sustaining an ecosystem for long duration in space.

I saw something like that about 8 years ago. It was at a doctors office, and it had 2 small frogs inside. Not sure what the frogs ate.

Probably a terrarium. It likely had a hidden way to open it up so the frogs could be fed more bugs. Bottled gardens are a plant-only variant that can last for decades with zero care outside of making sure it gets some light.

I have heard about those "eco-sphere" shrimp balls. Apparently it's not a good idea to stuff living beings in a tiny container full of their own rotting excrement. Who knew?
