The secret to high birth rates. It's so obvious I can't believe I didn't see it before. There's even a correlation between birth rates and this! The secret is... PENSIONS! (And other things that are designed to benefit the elderly like subsidized medical treatment but for now we'll just use the term pensions as a blanket.) You see, people have a lot of kids as insurance. So that when they get old their descendants will be more likely to look after them. There are other factors like being worried that your children will die (due to famine or war or whatever) and needing extra hands on a farm, or whatever, but ultimately this (the relation between government subsidized pensions and the birthrate) transcends both these things. There's not much more to add. Uh, I suppose this also correlates with my ideas that only the young should be given anything resembling government subsidized medical treatment and that most among the elderly are little more than a self-entitled burden on all societies. (That wasn't always the case, but it has been since the rise of government subsidies.)
