The fandom does an outright terrible job at portraying their personalities. I can't see Eridan being desperate for every troll, Tavros being the cutest troll ever, Karkat being a moeblob or Gamzee being someone who has the capacity to care deeply about all of his friends.
Basically the entire plot of 4chords, the most awful homestuck AU ever. 4accords is pretty damn good though.
This is why I don't let fandoms influence which characters I do and do not like. They hardly ever get them right anyway.
That is very true. Every large fandom goes through this. It is true that the Homestuck fandom is full of faggot nerds, but so is Hetalia, Naruto, Avatar, Vocaloid and so many other fandoms. The shit that has happened with the Homestuck fandom (wiki vandalism, shipping wars, fetish art etc) is not exclusive to it. I go on tumblr, I see a bunch of people freaking out over how vicious a few people are in the Homestuck fandom are as if they weren't aware of other fandoms that had people like that. Speaking of Hetalia, I don't get this whole supposed "war" between its fanbase and Homestuck's. I tried getting into Hetalia, but it bored the shit out of me and I found a high school history class to be more entertaining. But why is there a "war" between the two? It doesn't make sense.
I'm into both, but I'm not a ravish fangirl of either fandom. Also remember just because is complex doesn't make it better.
The complexity is a mere result of Hussie making the plot a giant fucking mess by turning minor plot devices and tiny details into larger components of the story.
