If you're not wearing pity as a badge of honor, then you're certainly using it to imply other things to your credit. In order to feel pity, one must first suppose a platform of superiority, then, having a bad conception of things, relate to others from that position in a purely negative way, that quite frankly, is unseemly in a learned being. The irony, of course, is the pity others have for such easily wounded vanity, resulting from emotional hypertrophy as a result of many years of anti-social behaviour. Like putting weight on an atrophied limb after getting it out of a cast. Vicious cycle.

You know, an off-hand remark from Moldbug about the upper class and lower class really put this concept into perspective for me.

The elites (brahmin) feel disdain, the plebeians (townies) feel resentment. Disdain/contempt can only be expressed from a higher position. Resentment can only be expressed from a lower position. The more I've thought about it, the more it's true. I've been stopping myself every time I feel "resentment" and forcing myself to turn it into contempt. It's been fascinating. It's part of the whole "fake it till you become it" mantra with the whole rugged masculinity thing. The entire way I carry myself has changed. The mind follows the body. If you can change your postures, behaviors, and emotional responses, you can change your mind and the minds of others.

You're a clever one. You're right, I don't feel pity. I'm merely a reflection of Humanity, you see. Everything is done in response or as a response. Humanity doesn't deserve pity or mercy or anything like that. I don't understand why we should put down a rabid dog but a Human who is blessed with sentience is given a relative slap on the wrist. Humans are better so we should hold them to higher standards. Logically, their punishment for failure should be more severe.

The only overt discriminatory attitudes towards the poor I've seen has been in those I'd easily classify as traitors. Quite a few came from poor families themselves. All, I'm sure, suffer some form of mental debilitation. For traitorous thoughts are surely brought on by mental problems. Doesn't really matter, I suppose. A corpse will keep you warm in the winter no matter its opinion.

The difference between a rabid dog and a rabid human is slight. Unfortunately, being "blessed with sentience" isn't something many criminals are. Also, look at it this way-- for whom is it easier to transgress the law? The dog, who's basically incapable short of being diseased, or the human with the ability to make decisions contrary to it's own survival? Also, what law? The law of this Babylonian morass of labyrinthine bureaucracy that we call America? Or the law of the species? or the law of Darwin? or the law of Nature? There's a lot of laws, and as humans, one can't take a step outside the house without breaking at least one of them.

Humanity doesn't deserve pity, agreed, but practitioners of compassion would argue that these things are most necessary just when they are least deserved, otherwise they're worthless. In other words, it's easy to feel for the hurts of children, animals, and other "innocent" (for lack of a better term) things, but not so much drug addicts, the homeless, or hood rats. It's just this feeling of empathy for shitty humans that, while perhaps excessive, and in some ways harmful, progresses us, and attempts to raise those up that would be raised. Everyone deserves a chance to separate themselves from the chaff that gets burned, so I wouldn't argue that pity is totally useless, rather, that everyday it is becoming more and more so.

The multi-faceted nature of action makes it difficult to really say whether or not there's ever solutions for the problems of society, since for every problem solved, another two spring up, and so on, until the structure of the society that's been created collapses under the weight of it's own ever increasingly ridiculous system. The best social policy to push for is none at all, since dichotomy fallacies are for sycophants, and philistines.

What's funny is I think most of the population of this forum are probably better people than any of us would like to admit. If anything, the infighting is interesting, since most of the politically minded people on here seem to have rather Utopian tendencies, myself and OP included. Of course childish trolling is childish trolling, however masterful the link wars are between the two parties :D

My God, I go off topic.
