what did they do the intro of the simpsons? Not even going to talk about that mess john k. made. there are no words.
I dont know whats up with that love for cartoons and comics. Comics have always been inferior to books with ther simple language and at best average storylines. And then everything is drawn ugh, let kids use their own imagination. And cartoons, well, Looney tunes were funny. But then, after the 50s it all became shittier and then suddenly the try hards came with their "edgy" "adult" "humor" shows and turned it into serious buisness. And now its just about brainwashing children.
I like both books and comics. A book lets you paint your own image. A comic does help to guide you, but you still get the same thing without walls of explanation; a single panel of a comic could easily be one or two paragraphs of explanation. Older cartoons 1920-1959 were made for adults. Yeah there are cartoons for kids, but does that stop you from enjoying them past a certain age? It's like wine or soda...not everyone is going to like one or the other or even both.
What the fuck did they do to the Simpsons!? And yea, John K. is such a putz even Billy West hated to work with him. Sorry, but Vasquez and good don't go together because the guy's a douche bag. Zim and Johnny are pretty retarded when you get over the zany goth and monkey-cheese humor (Zim sucked after season 1 or 2). The guy's a hack people barely remember unless they go into Hot Topic for the Hell of it (even Hot Topic probably forgot about Zim and Vasquez). Everett Peck was great in his day. Duckman was a prick who saw things in black and white context (he deserves his shitty reputation and being hated by everybody), but what makes him likable is that he's upfront and honest in a world full of 90s hypocritical, politically correct bullshit. He can see the beauty/good qualities in people normally ignored like some ugly chick who saved his life (even when she had plastic surgery, and became superficial, Duckman still liked her). He has his rare moments where his rantings and actions make sense, and he gets the picture whereas everybody is lost because they're too busy being straight-edge or pc about life. This is probably one of the best scenes in the series: I was surprised to find out Mike Judge tried to throw in some social commentary through Beavis and Butt-Head when I picked up his Dvds (you don't pick up on that stuff when you're a kid).
Ralph Baski More an animator, but close enough. Most of today's avante garde cartoonists are just trying to copy him. Ed Roth Not really a cartoonist at all, he nonetheless did the designs for his 'rat fink' characters. Kristy Karacas Not sure if he actually draws it or not, but he gets the credit anyway. Superjail is one of my favorite things, particularly the first season. Every frame has so much going on, but the action and principle characters are never crowed out. The later seasons seem lazier, as far as the art goes.
Oh yea, no one mentioned him yet... Theodor Geisel If you don't recognize his work, your ticket for one lost childhood is redeemable at your local brothel
Guilty-- but I really like Bakshi because of his " I don't give a fuck " attitude. At least that's what I got from him when I watched the special stuff on my Wizards DvD. He didn't care what people thought of his work, and when he goes down memory lane on making that movie he really cared about what he was doing. Same goes for Crumb, I use to think Crumb was an insufferable asshole when I first saw the movie about him, but now nearly 20 years later I finally get him. He's just misanthropic which is what I've become the past few years. But despite that, he works, he draws, he loves doing what he does which makes up for it. Another one I'm a fan of is Frank Frazetta He started with comics, but he's pretty much living proof one can expand their horizons, you just got to love what you do. I missed the documentary about him Painting With Fire but a friend of mine told me that after he suffered a stroke he switched to painting with his left hand. If that's true, then that's real passion. Doesn't matter if his stuff was good, the fact he still painted and didn't let a stroke slow him down is more energy than most artists have.
Franzetta was the best cheesecake artist. No one else can draw perky-titted women in chainmail bikini riding tigers that tastefully.
The transmetropolitan guy. Dunno... The Blacksad guys. Canales and Guarnido. Absolutely superb. Rosinski, the Thorgal artist: Gerhard Seyfried. If you understand german, read it, those large pics are hilarious: "A vision of Berlin governed by the green party"
All the people who illustrated the Rupert The Bear books: I had many of the annuals as a child and adored them.
