Coming back to that Voodoo short for a moment, I love how she has to shoehorn symbolism into fucking everything she ever does.

It isn't to say that having symbolism in your work, be it a comic or animation, is in itself bad. If done right, it can enhance your story and make it more well-rounded and deeper. The key word here is "done right".

Sak o' Shit here, on the other hand, is far from doing just that. Half the time you can feel the addition of symbolism is completely forced, and even though the concept of having the kids represent the riders of the apocalypse *might've* been a good idea to explore, in the hands of a talented writer, it gets completely ruined by the piss-poor execution and lack of creativity on the creator's part.

I mean, just watch that animation a few times. If you hadn't read later on that the kids are supposed to represent the riders of the apocalypse, and that "Cecilia" is supposed to be the human incarnation of Nature, you'd have absolutely no idea that this short has some sort of symbolic meaning attached to it.

I felt like that watching this shit for the first time: to me it was just a mediocre racist animation about some black voodoo canibals preparing to eat a fat colonial guy. That's it. And I bet that if you took this clip and showed it to random passerbys they would've told you the exact same thing.

Anyway why would Mother Nature give birth to Death, War, Famine, and Conquest while still being pristine? I would think for Mother Nature to create such atrocities, she would have to be corrupt and soiled. I also don't understand how she would birth such human creations such as War and Conquest, these are things that are not common in nature at all. No other animal but humans are capable of war and domination. Not even exotic animals who've been introduced to eco systems they have no part of, that's gluttony. A better metaphor for Cecilia would for her children Death and Famine to consume the purely human concepts of War and Conquest to heal Mother Nature's corruption. Perhaps War and Conquest are antagonist of the story and are the fathers Death and Famine respectfully.

Yes, that's the interpretation of the white horse rider in pop culture. Conquest was always one of the Four Horsemen while Pestilence as a rider is very recent. Besides, Pestilence is too much like Famine, and maybe due to a mistranslation of the pale (pale meaning a sickly green color in Greek) horse's rider name. Pestilence as a horseman is redundant.
