1. Dear "news" outlets (you know who you are). Please stop painting this as "Liberal" or "Left-wing" violence. This is not a partisan issue. Trying to use this to push an anti-liberal agenda takes away from the real goal, which is pissing off everyone equally.

There seems to be some confusion as to my intentions and motivations regarding this project, so I'm going to take the time to spell it out right now.

I did not do this out of malice or hatred. I did not make this purely to cause suffering to the victims of a tragedy. To the contrary, I was shocked and bewildered by what I saw on my television that morning, after I walked down the stairs in my underwear, laid back in my recliner, and turned on the news while eating pop-tarts off my bare chest. When a tragedy like this occurs, part of my process is to try and recreate the events under simulated conditions. When I was nine, this took the form of two towers of legos and a toy airplane, recreating the events that were playing back over and over on the news that fateful September morning. Today, a computer game engine and a set of design tools takes the place of my box of legos and my toy plane. Recreating the event that occurred at that theater helps give me insight into it. I can put myself in the shoes of the perpetrator, and gain a better understanding of what went through his mind when he was painting this bloody picture. As I developed the ideas that would go into this, and started collaborating with my friend Night-Sky, my purpose grew from satisfying my own personal curiosity, to satisfying an even broader curiosity of mine about human nature. My hypothesis has been for a while that a piece of artwork that elicits negative emotions will actually benefit from the negative attention, with infamy fueling popularity. In short, people will download and play offensive games just because they're controversial. I've seen this effect before, in both Super Columbine Massacre RPG, and the V-Tech Massacre flash game. Both products generated a lot more media coverage than most indie games do, and as a result became a lot more popular than titles with a similar amount of effort put into them. I should also point out that neither of these two projects resulted in anyone getting sued, despite portraying the victims of a tragedy(so from a legal standpoint we should be safe). Essentially, what I set out to do was make my own "too soon" game to see if it could attain any level of infamy as well. I suppose you could say I made this to cause drama, but I'm doing so as part of a social experiment, not to satisfy any kind of sadistic need. If it does reach people traumatized by what happened, it will be because the media made a big deal out of it. If the media doesn't carry it(which they damn well shouldn't, since there are far more important stories to cover) than the RL victims will likely never hear about it. People know what this site is about as soon as they see the front page. For a victim of a notable tragedy to look up said event on this wiki would be akin to a butcher sticking his hand in a meat grinder.

That said, I doubt my tomfoolery will garner that much attention anyway.

Now, to address the concerns you guys have with brightness. On all the machines I tested on, the brightness was fine. Dark, but still able to see. If you want to make things brighter, you can open up starter.fps/client/prefs.cs in a text editor and modify line 71, the gamma correction pref. This value will change the brightness of everything, so increasing it even a little will make things brighter. I took the liberty of adding this information to the readme file, and replacing the default prefs.cs file with one that already has increased brightness. I also switched the rendering mode to OpenGL by default, which looks and works better on everything except some ATI-powered machines. The download link is now updated with these changes, so if you don't want to modify the scripts yourself, you can delete and redownload. Anyone who downloads from the moment this post was made onwards will already have the changes. We'll call this "version 1.01".

If you'd like to modify any existing skin textures, they can be found in starter.fps/data/shapes/Q4S/player. Male skins are in the male folder, female skins are in the female folder, and outside those two folders are all additional skins that can be applied to the player(though there isn't an easy way to do this yet, you have to use the console and the world editor to grab the player's object number and exec the setskinname(); command on them.).

Anyone who wants to make changes to this is welcome to do so, and I would appreciate any link-dropping you guys can do. If you're worried about getting your FB account banned, you can just make a new account while using TOR and enter "Leeroy Jenkins" as the name. I did this once to troll a news organization's facebook post about a missing girl, who was actually taken by her own family against the will of the state, which is a far cry from what the news post was implying and what all the ignorant well-wishers were believing.

Anyway, I also don't have the means to create and upload a video for this just yet(I'm still living in a motel room, fuck the police) so if someone wants to make a trailer and upload it to their own or a dummy youtube account, that would be swell. Also feel free to mirror the current version wherever you wish, so if dropbox decides to drop it, the project can still be found. I'll add any mirror links you post here to the 1st post of this topic, and I assume they'll be added to the wiki article on the subject as the need arises.

P.S. Download link is in the first post, in case anyone missed it.

Don't count on it. Super Columbine RPG made news and it was released 10 years after the shooting.

There's nothing criminal about this. Being tasteless is not against the law (to the best of my knowledge, anyway). You might get some heat from victim's families and support groups, particularly over mapping victim's likeness into the game. Worst case scenario is they want to make a civil lawsuit about it, but they'd have to find you first.

Godspeed and thank you for your work. I'll check it out later this week,

Of course, Newgrounds is actually a great file host.
Just rename the file to The Clown Prince.mp3 and upload it to the music section.
Nobody will notice a 60.32 MB corrupt music file on there, the random data will sound far better than the garageband default synths that ever gets posted on there. Genius thinking, beefrave.

If you want to know how to get the special weapons, take a look at the readme.txt. You can also lock the doors and make yourself invincible.

Also, +1 for the article. I didn't think this warranted its own but thanks. My only suggestion would be to add a few more screenshots and a video when one becomes available. It could also be featured a bit more prominently on the Aurora Shooting article. Just a little section that mentions the game, or even just a one-sentence description next to the link at the bottom of the page so readers know what it is before they click.

I don't have any handy, but I know tge can be compiled for Linux. I only used the stock engine, so any 1.5.2 torque binary should work with the script base.

This thread details how to compile TGE 1.5.2 for linux. Grab yourself a copy of the engine source from your favorite pirate website and give it a shot if you want. If you're successful I'll be happy to post links to linux binaries of the engine on the first page of this topic, and in the article.

The binary from this demo will work if anyone wants to run on OSX. If someone puts together a mac-friendly archive that uses this in place of the existing exe I'd be happy to post that here as well, I just don't have time to track down someone mentally deficient enough to own a mac so I can test it and use their archiving software.

It works fine under the latest version of WINE.

Under WINE and Windows both, it appears to exit/crash when after you get shot by an NPC weapon a few times. It might be crashing on death.

It runs on a full sized game engine, you can't just convert it to a Flash/Java applet. It's free of viruses, you just unzip the entire package to a folder of your choosing, and double-click Clown.exe. If you're not willing to put ~15 seconds of effort into it, then I guess you get to miss out.

It'll probably run on a modded fleshlight if that's what you're getting at.
